Contemporary Theology

Dale lectures in theology on a part time basis at Japan Bible Seminary and at Tokyo Christian University. His teaching of contemporary theology at JBS has resulted in several publications, one of which is titled, "Missionary Primer on Contemporary Evangelical Theological Methodology." It can be read and/or downloaded at the Publications tab of Dale's jtheo.net website. Click on the image at the right to go that website.

The purpose of the site is to offer the English speaking world a glimpse of contemporary evangelical theology in Japan, most of which is written in Japanese. The site contains English translations of some of those Japanese theological sources.

Dale made the website partially in order to help the Japan Evangelical Missionary Association (JEMA) frame a truthful but loving response to a May 2006 publication of the Japan Evangelical Association (JEA). Most evangelical missionaries in Japan are represented by JEMA while most Japanese evangelical churches are represented by JEA. A number of the articles in the influential and popular current JEA publication are helpful and constructive. But some articles, using manipulative theological methodology, claim that key evangelical theological teachings such as inerrancy and premillenialism are to blame for the US initiated Iraq War. One stated implication is that these fundamental theological positions need to be modified or discarded. This argumentation is motivated by a desire to distance Japanese evangelicals from the war and from the Japanese government's support of the war, as well as by a concern that evangelism in Japan is being hindered by what is perceived as American evangelical support of the Iraq War.

The jtheo.net site will eventually include an English translation of the entire JEA publication. To date, summaries of each article are posted. Dale's article about contemporary theology posted on jtheo.net is JEMA's initial response to this JEA publication. Other responses will be forthcoming.
